  • A ballot initiative submitted for approval to California voters in the November 4th election, which would eliminate the currently existing right of same-sex partners to marry, and amend the state constitution by adding the following sentence:

Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

An ad urging approval of this mean-spirited amendment is currently appearing on the Wordie front page, courtesy of Ads by Google.

Supporters of the proposition like to refer to it using the emotionally charged phrase "the marriage protection amendment".

  • I don't like the placement of "only." It implies that no other relationship between a man and a woman is recognizable under the law. It should say (and I don't support it, but I do support proper use of the word "only") "Marriage between only a man and a woman is valid..."

But come to that, I don't get what marriage is supposed to be protected from. It isn't as if someone were going around saying "all marriages are henceforth and forever dissolved!" Isn't an institution strengthened by the more people who live by it?

Well... It's just a question, and mostly rhetorical, so perhaps this isn't the place for it. Apologies to anyone who might be offended. See also civil rights and equality.

  • Interesting, sionnach--aside from the whole Proposition 8 argument (which will only infuriate me if I think too long about it), Google has been taken to task for violating/ignoring its own advertising policy on not allowing "advocating against any organization, person, or group of people." More here.

  • Google also publicly opposed proposition 8, donating money for the no campaign. So that is unfortunate on multiple levels.
